Our streets diiritnr the afternoon bore a deserted appearance, while the lied Mtn can claim the distinction of having attracted to the park the ianrost concourse of people that ever assembled on the grounds. The number in attendance was estimated at between two and three thousand persons.

Dancing was one of the principal pastimes. In a crowd of such dimensions there were naturally more lovers of the terpsichorean art than could be accomodated on one tloor anil the dancing therefore went on incessantly, the warm weather apparently detracting little om the pleasure. The gimie of base bail between Riverside and Danville, which occupied the greater part of the afternoon, was interesting only as one of the most unequal contests ever played at the park. It would not be fair to say that Danville was not in it a little bit, although it was only a "very the score being too iu favor of Riverside. Washington, Sept.

5. Ever since the printed reports of the sensational utterances of the naval chaplain, Joseph P. Mcliityre, reached the navy department the olficials have been making a Quiet inquiry into the accuracy of the newspaper publications. The chaplain, who was attached to the Oregron and was on board when the battle of July 3 was fought, was accredited with some savage criticism of Admiral Sampson, Captain Evans and various other of the officers of the American fleet, insisting that to th officers and men of the Oregon alone belonged the victory achieved over the Spanish squadron. He was particularly severe on Captain Robley D.

Evans, whom he charged with cowardice. Apparently th'e navy department has now satistied itself that the chaplain really uttered the language ascribed to him. for it has ordered his trial by court martial on charges to the prejudice of good order and discipline and unbecoming an officer. The chaplain is now on leave of absence in Denver. Alger Wants ttt Know.
