Faye Young, Avenue Riverside. CHICAGO (UPI) The Rev. Francis X. Lawlor, a maverick priest who has bucked both the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and the Chicago political organization, has lost what he described as his last political battle. The gaunt, white-haired 57-year-old priest who has championed the blue collar white neighborhoods on Chicagos Southwest Side says hell return to his priestly duties.

'Lawlor, a Republican running for Congress in the 5th District Democratic turf tnht inludes the home of Mayor Richard Daley was crushed Tuesday by State Rep. John Fary, regarded as a stand-in for a possible congressional candidacy by Daleys son, Richard. With nearly all the votes in, Fary, best known for his successful efforts to legalize bingo in Illinois, held nearly 72 per cent of the vote with more than 53,000 ballots. Only about one-third of the registered voters in the sprawling district showed up at the polls. In Chicago politics, a low voter turnout means a preponderance of Democratic organization loyalists.

Fary hardly bothered to campaign, relying on the power of the Democratic organization. Lawlor had hammered away at federal housing programs he said promote white flight and destroy city neighborhoods. Its pretty obvious the machine has won again, Lawlor said scarcely an hour after the polls closed. Its a well trained army that went out and did its work. Lawlor, stripped of his priestly functions in the Chicago archdiocese after refusing a transfer and continuing his work organizing Southwest Side whites, had become disillusioned with politics and community activism as an independent Chicago alderman.

But when Rep. John Kluczyn-ski, died in January, Lawlor decided to give politics -one last fling, won a court 13-year old girl struck by auto while riding bike MIDDLEBURG A 13-year-old Middleburg area girl was injured yesterday when she was struck while riding her bicycle on Route 104, half a mile south of Middleburg.
