What should prevent the citizens of Northumberland and vicinity from having an old fashioned Fourth oj July Celebration Recall the scenes of thirty and forty years ago.

Invite Gov. Wenck and S. Burkenbine to play the fifes, anil James Shriner and Wm. H. Waples the bass drums, and Jacob Ulp, now of Lock Haven, and Jabob Leiseiiring the tenor drums; The ladies might turn out in linsey-woolsey and check aprons, blue and gray stockings, calf -skin shoes with leather strings, and sun bonnets 1vith ruffles in the seams of the crown, or sciit-tfe bonnets with deep fronts and high crowns.

(How sweethearts kissed in those days would take a man of great experience to tell.) And the gentlemen might appear itiobrs coats and blue buttons with long swallow tails and big high stiff collars; great shirt collars of home-made linen with red cotton hand kerchiefs tied in large bows. Select some one to make a spread-eagle speech; and have parade; and a jolly good time generally. We merely print the above as a feeler, and as a move towards havfng something in old Northumberland on the Centennial Fourth of July; Over the Bane. A feat was performed on the river bank a few days ago by Jim the colored porter of Eckert's hotel; which we will venture to say can hot be accomplished again withottt breaking a neck or two. Jim was sent to the bank of the iiver at the foot of Queen Street with horse and wagon for the purpoSe' of hauling a cargo of beer from the boat to the hotel.

After the beer had been load ed the horse commenced to back and backed over the steep twenty to thirty feet embankment, causing the horse, wa gon; beer and driver to turn several som ersaults before reaching a. level, and strange to say w.ithetrt seriously injuring either horse or driver. Jim has resigned his position at the hotel shrse. Dom Pedro, emperor of Brazil, and svfite; passed- through this place on their way to Niagara Falls on the 7.20 P. M.
